About the Internet Society and its South Africa chapter The Internet Society is a not-for-profit membership organisation founded in 1991 to provide leadership in the management of Internet related standards, educational, and policy development issues. It has chapters in over 90 countries around the world. Through its current initiatives in support of education and training, Internet standards and protocol, and public policy, ISOC has played a critical role in ensuring that the Internet has developed in a stable and open manner.
It is the organisational home of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Architecture Board (IAB), the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) and other Internet-related bodies.
The Internet Society South African Chapter (ISOC-ZA) supports the ideals and initiatives of the global body. ISOC-ZA is specifically concerned with finding ways to bridge the growing digital divide in Africa generally and South Africa in particular. With over 800 members, ISOC-ZA carefully monitors policy and regulatory issues affecting Internet users as well as how local industry acts within the global Internet village. http://www.isoc.org.za
AfriNIC
Headquartered in Cyber City, Ebene, Mauritius, AfriNIC is a non-governmental and not-for-profit membership based organisation. Our main role is to serve the African region as the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) whose primary responsibilities are distributing and managing Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and related resources. At present, there are a total of five RIRs worldwide.

ZADNA
ZADNA (ZA Domain Name Authority) is a Section 21 company established in terms of Chapter X of the Electronic Communications and Transactions (ECT) Act of 2002 to manage and administer ZA – South Africa’s Internet top level domain. ZADNA is a membership-based organisation and its core statutory mandate is to:
- Manage and administer the ZA namespace
- License ZA registries and registrars
- Promote international best practices in domain name management
- Draft and publish ZA regulations, policies and guidelines
- Conduct research and surveys for the improvement of ZA
- Provide policy and other relevant recommendations to the SA Minister of Communications
In addition, ZADNA also oversees the resolution of domain name disputes in the ZA space. It also participates in various local and international Internet governance and development fora, including ICANN, Internet Governance Forum and AfTLD.
